13 STARS, 1910-1945 (SESQUICENTENNIAL - WWII), BETSY ROSS PATTERN, SILK:

13 star parade flag, printed on silk, with its stars arranged in the perfect circle wreath pattern often attributed to Betsy Ross. The attribution is widely thought to be a myth, created by her descendents, particularly her nephew, who founded the Betsy Ross House, and her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, who made tiny flags in the East Wing of Independence Hall in Philadelphia and sold them to tourists. They proudly claimed that this was what the first flag looked like, but no hard evidence exists to substantiate it.

This flag was probably made sometime during the first half of the 20th century (1910-1945), possibly for use at the sesquicentennial of our Nation's independence in 1926 (our 150th anniversary).

Mounting: The veneered mahogany frame dates to the period between 1880 and 1910. The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective. Condition: Excellent.
