Folk art or furniture? This question comes to mind when viewing this whimsical, stand-up, desk-on-frame that survives in its original painted surface, with intricate waist molding and its original bail pull with oval back plates. The color was originally Robin's egg blue, as can be seen in several areas which were not varnished or were protected from oxidation of the varnish, which, over time yielded the current shade of olive green.
Inside the hinged lift-top are pigeon holes and a narrow drawer. The blind dovetailed case and gallery and the pinned and mortised frame are made of pine. Probably of New York or New England origin, ca 1810-1830.
An exceptional example in all respects, of a rare design that was probably made for use by a paymaster so that the desk portion could be easily locked and transported.
Condition: There is some loss on the waist molding on the right-hand side. There is paint wear on the right side of the front leg where the leg of the man who sat next to the desk, probably on a stool, likely rubbed against. This is well patinated and not recent. The escutcheon from the keyhole in the top portion is absent. |
