I love the eye-dazzler-like presentation of this red and white, sunshine & shadows pattern, signature quilt, made by the Ladies Aid Society of Royersford, Pennsylvania (Montgomery County). The center block is inscribed with a dip pen with the following text: “Ladies Aid, U.E. Church, Royersford,” followed by the date of “1901.” Most of the surrounding white blocks throughout are inscribed with the names of the donors, primarily Germanic, who gave to the charitable fundraiser for which this quilt was produced. Made entirely of cotton, this is a summer weight quilt, the piecework was accomplished by machine, and the back is plain white cotton.
Ladies Aid societies were founded during the Civil War, throughout both the North and South, to provide comfort and care to soldiers. This could be anything from monetary support, to medical supplies, to basic necessities such as food and clothing. This particular chapter was headquartered at the church.
Founded in 1891, the United Evangelical Church was an outgrowth of the Evangelical Association, also known as the “Albright Brethren,” a body of American Christians chiefly of German descent. Its predecessor was founded in 1800 by Rev. Jacob Albright, a German-speaking native of Pennsylvania (1759–1808) and followed a Methodist-Episcopal doctrine.
