TRIANGULAR FELT SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT , UNUSUAL WITH THE SINGULAR WORD "VOTE" INSTEAD OF "VOTES" FOR WOMEN, 1910-20

Available: Sold
Frame Size (H x L): Approx. 18" x 27"
Flag Size (H x L): 9" x 18.25"
Description....:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed black lettering that reads: "Vote for Women," on a cheddar yellow ground, with two black cotton tape ties along the hoist. Note the interesting use of the singular word "vote" as opposed to the more common "votes." I have no encountered this before on a textile and this is the only pennant I have seen in this exact form.

Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, though these sometimes appear in the States.

Suffrage pennants are extremely scarce and sought after. So far as I am aware, this example remains undocumented in any text on the subject.

Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton twill, black in color (treated for color-fastness). The mount was placed in a modern molding with a step-down profile and a flat profile, gilded molding was added as a liner. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: Excellent overall, with only the most minor soiling and minor overall oxidation.
