BANNER WEATHERVANE, MADE BY HARRIS & CO. (BOSTON), WITH WITCHES HAT STYLE FINIAL AND ARROW HEAD, ca 1880
Dimensions (inches): 25" wide x 47" tall (incl. stand) x 15" deep
Description:
BANNER WEATHERVANE, MADE BY HARRIS & CO. (BOSTON), WITH WITCHES HAT STYLE FINIAL AND ARROW HEAD, ca 1880:

Banner style weathervane, made by A.J. Harris & Co. [later Harris & Co.] in Boston , Massachusetts, of molded and sheet copper. The most notable features are the witch's hat style finial and arrow head and exceptional, untouched, verdigris surface. Under the finial is an interesting trifoil, like a shamrock or clover. The banner itself has a pierced, Maltese cross design and there are three decorative balls spaced around cast iron directionals with fanciful, scrollwork arms. Although the weathervane itself is unsigned, these distinctive directionals are a signature Harris feature. Made ca 1880.

Condition: There are four repaired bullet holes. These are actually nice to see, as opposed to detrimental, because they help legitimize its authenticity and because they are part of its history. There are minor, soldered breaks in the middle of the Maltese cross. There are minor welded repairs in the cast iron scrollwork of the directionals. Overall excellent with the sort of legitimate, untouched surface that is very important to collectors.
