CONFEDERATE NAVY JACK or BATTLE-STYLE PARADE FLAG, 1910-1930:
Confederate battle-style parade flag, printed on oilcloth cotton. This design, sometimes called the "Southern Cross", when in rectangular format, saw official use as the Confederate Navy Jack. When square in shape, is often termed the "flag of the Army of Northern Virginia", after the well-known division, commanded by General Lee, that carried it.
Made circa 1910-1930, this is an unusually small example that would have probably seen use at a United Confederate Veterans reunion. The U.C.V. was the primary post-war organization for Confederate soldiers.
Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a gold, fluted-profile frame that dates to the 1900-1920 period. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.
Condition: Excellent. There are no significant condition issues. |
