FIREHOUSE BANNER WITH HAND-SEWN, APPLIQUED STARS AND TEXT THE READS "UNION No. 1", CIVIL WAR ERA, EXTREMELY RARE:

I have never before encountered a 19th Century firehouse banner of this nature until I discovered this and another of the same type among the holdings of a Pennsylvania collector. Made during the Civil War Era, while the specific history has been lost to the ages, the verbiage "UNION No. 1" is obviously appealing for many reasons and curiously appropriate for the period in which it was made.

9 white stars and the accompanying text are made of cotton and were expertly appliqued with hand-stitching. The body of the banner is made of wool bunting that has been pieced and bound with treadle stitching.

The overall presentation is striking. This, accompanied by the great rarity of early, patriotic, firehouse banners make both this example and its mate an extraordinary find.

Mounting: The banner has been hand-stitched throughout to 100% silk organza for support. It was then hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. Fabric of similar coloration was placed behind the textile to mask minor losses. The mount was placed in a black painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The front is U.V. protective acrylic.

Condition: There is minor mothing and wear, but the overall condition is excellent for the period.
