Painted American blanket chest of the early 19th century, in yellow paint with whimsically brushed, red decoration. This is done in a combination of looping, figure-eights, interspersed with loosely brushed dots, etc. Below the keyhole, with its brass escutcheon, are arched strokes that come together in a subtle yet purposeful, stylized tulip.
Made circa 1830, the block-and-turned, black-painted, Sheraton feet, with incised rings, are rather fine and taper to a point. This is a six-board box with dovetailed joinery. The molded edges on the top and around the base are applied with flattened, square, finish nails. Pennsylvania or Ohio Germanic origin, Mennonite or Amish. Made of poplar. The strap hinges are 18th century. These were at some point added to replace cast butt hinges.
Condition: There is modest to moderate paint loss on the top, but the color is such that it still looks great. Minor losses elsewhere. There is no paint restoration. A couple of added nails at the corners. Hinges changed at some point as mentioned. |
