Bridle rosettes, also known as bridle buttons are utilitarian accessories used on the harness of a horse or pony. They are used in pairs to help position a bridle correctly on the head. Comprised of a round or oval top and usually about 1.5” - 2” in diameter, they typically have a square-cornered D-ring on the reverse. One rosette is slipped onto each end of the browband (the strap going across the horse’s forehead), then pushed back against the cheek straps to prevent slipping. Bridle buttons have a long history. They probably have been used for nearly as long as the bridles they have decorated. In ancient Egypt, designed them as protection for their horses, with the rosettes supposedly attracting and neutralizing the “eyes” of evil spirits.
Bridle rosettes can run the full range from very plain to highly artistic. One of their first notable uses was in the military, where most were unadorned, simple metal, except for initials (“US” being one example). During the 1800s, they grew popular with the riding and driving public and were produced in increasingly decorative styles. By the Victorian period, thick glass domes were covering polished brass backs. Beneath the domes, fancy, colorful diecuts and transfers would be inserted. Made in the Victorian manner, this particular example dates to WWII and displays the seal of the U.S. Army, laid over a red, white, & blue “V for Victory.”
Mounting: The rosette affixed to a background of 100% cotton, black in color. The mount was then placed in a combination of moldings that are made of wood, but have exceptional finishes that look like rusted iron. A shadow box was created to accommodate the object. The glazing is U.V. protective glass.
