48 Star American national parade flag, printed on paper, with overprinted text that reads: “Vivet Les Alies,” followed by “Crème Simon, Soins De La Peau.” The first portion roughly translates to "Long Live the Allies." The text along the bottom is an advertisement for a women's beauty product, “Crème Simon,” accompanied by its use in, “care of the skin.” Developed by Joseph Simon in 1860, Crème Simon was immensely popular and, by the early 20th century, had become a household name.
The flag was handed out at the end of World War II (U.S. involvement 1941-1945), to celebrate Allied victory, with reverence to the role played by the United States in liberating France from Nazi Germany. The hoist end was rolled over to form an open sleeve, through which a metal or wooden staff was once affixed.
Overprinted flags like this one are extremely rare in the WWII era. This is the only example of this style that I have encountered. This particular flag was purchased in France, by the individual from whom I acquired it, many years ago. I sold it to collector Richard Pierce, sometime prior to 2005. It is documented on page 91 of his book "The Stars & The Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit" by J. Richard Pierce (J. Richard Pierce, 2005).
Mounting: This is a pressure mount between U.V. protective acrylic and 100% cotton velvet. The veneered mahogany molding dates to the mid-19th century. To this is rippled profile molding, black with gold highlights, was added as a cap.
Condition: There is some soiling, but there are no serious condition issues. |
