Description:
Wool felt pennant with a variant of the federal eagle, rendered in 7 colors, holding a streamer in its beak that reads “E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one),” gripping an olive branch & arrows, and with a federal shield upon its breast, adorned with 13 stars. 48 stars are interspersed about the national bird in an arched formation, this count purposefully to represent the period of time in which the textile was produced, circa 1915-1926. “U.S.A.” appears beyond the device, in ivory white, in artistically attractive, shaded block letters. The fabric itself, blue in color, is attractively faded. There is a white felt binding along the hoist, applied with machine stitching, that incorporates two pairs of white felt ties.

Pennants like this one, that read simply "United States," "U.S.A.," or "America" seem to have appeared in and around the patriotism of WWI (U.S. involvement 1917-18). Their production may have begun earlier and likely continued through the celebration of our nation's 150th anniversary of independence, in 1926. Others appeared during WWII (U.S. involvement 1941-45), but the examples dating around the First World War tend to have different qualities and graphics. Many years of experience with flags, banners, and all manner of patriotic textiles of this era allow me to classify this to the earlier of these two eras.

Mounting: For 25 years we have maintained a specialized department for this purpose. Our lead conservator holds a master's degree in textile conservation from one of the nation’s top programs. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and related textiles and have preserved thousands of examples.

The pennant has been hand-stitched to its background, which is 100% hemp fabric, ivory in color, with a twill weave. The two part frame consists of a cove-shaped molding that is very dark brown in color, with a wood grain surface, to which a black-painted and hand-gilded Italian molding was added as a cap. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic (Plexiglas).

Condition: There is moderate fading and soiling. Many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use.
