This WWI era (U.S. Involvement 1917-18) lithographed cigar box label, in red, white and blue with gilded embellishment, has nice patriotic imagery that includes a spread-winged American eagle hovering over crossed American flags, with a shield upon its breast and 12 stars in an arched formation overhead, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. There is whimsical scrollwork below with a round patriotic shield or medallion. The name of the cigar brand, "Pride of the Age", appears both above and below the central image.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding has ebonized band, retains its original gilded liner, and dates to the period between 1870 and 1890. This is a sandwich mount between U.V. protective acrylic and 100% cotton, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose.
Condition: There are a couple tiny spots of foxing, and a small sliver of loss in the upper left corner, but there are no serious condition issues. |
