WWI POSTER FEATURING UNCLE SAM AND LADY BRITANNIA, ARM-IN-ARM, ACCOMPANIED BY THE AMERICAN EAGLE AND BRITISH LION, ILLUSTRATED BY JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG TO COMMEMORATE BRITAIN’S DAY, DEC. 7TH, 1918
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
Beautiful WWI poster with artwork rendered by American artist and illustrator James Mongomery Flagg (June 18, 1877 – May 27, 1960). Printed by the American Lithographic Company of New York in 1918, the design features Uncle Sam locked at the elbows with Lady Britannia, accompanied by a bald eagle and the British lion. Entitled “Side By Side – Britannia,” the purpose was to commemorate Britain’s Day. Held on Dec. 7th, 1918 in New York and Washington, the events honored the contributions of Great Britain to Allied victory in World War I and celebrated the friendship between our two nations.

Ironically, 23 years later, on December 7, 1941, Japanese forces would attack Pearl Harbor, forcing United States to declare war and join Britain once again in WWII.

Born in Pelham Manor, Westchester County, New York, north of Manhattan, Flagg created the “I WANT YOU” Uncle Sam image in 1917 for another WWII poster, which became the most iconic version ever rendered.

Mounting: The poster is mounted with a thick mat covered in 100% black cotton twill. The scooped profile molding has a rope style lip and a finish that is very dark brown in color, nearly black, with reddish highlights and overtones. To this a flat molding with a finish like gunmetal was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.
