CAST SPREAD WING EAGLE WITH BRONZE PAINTED SURFACE AND GREAT FORM, WWI ERA, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA:
Large, cast aluminum eagle in a form I have seen on just one other occasion. Found in Allegany County (Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania, the piece was formerly mounted in a school over a honor roll of soldiers who served in WWI (U.S. involvement 1917-18). The display was disassembled and sold.
The surface of the eagle was artfully painted in the period in which it was made, probably sometime between 1918 and the sesquicentennial of American independence in 1926 (our 150th anniversary), to appear as if it were copper or bronze. It is an untouched, legitimate surface with great depth and is uncommonly attractive.
The design of the casting is bold, with angel-like wings and a head facing severely to its right, featuring a stern brow, a profound beak, and an especially detailed eye. The profile is unusual without talons or a device of any kind. Perfect for above a doorway, over a painting or a framed flag.
Condition: Excellent, with very minor wear. |
