Description....:
48 STARS, CROCHETED, A PARTICULARLY BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1912 - WWI ERA, WITH AN ATTRACTIVE CHESTNUT BROWN HOIST:

Beginning around the turn of the century, it became popular to make American flags from various forms of needlework, primarily by tatting and crochet. Made sometime between 1912 and WWI (U.S. involvement 1917-18), this wonderful little flag has attractive visual attributes and is particularly nice among its counterparts. Hand-crocheted of cotton and one-of-a-kind, its five-pointed, wheel-spoke stars are embroidered in white cotton floss. The profile of the textile is somewhat wavy, due to its homemade construction, which contributes a degree of movement to its presentation.

Note the strong, royal blue color of the canton and the scarlet red stripes. The dark brown hoist binding, also crocheted, is an especially nice feature that lends the flag an early look. The stars are arranged in the official 6 rows of 8, but are upside down in orientation on their vertical axis, with two points up instead of one. All of the above features add strong folk qualities to the flag's design.

The 48 star flag became official in 1912 following the addition of New Mexico and Arizona. It remained the official flag throughout WWI, WWII, and the Korean War (1950-53), until Alaska gained statehood in 1959 and the 49th star was added.

Mounting: The substantial walnut molding dates to the period between 1860 and the 1870's, has an excellent, early bubbled surface, and retains its original gilded liner. The flag has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: Excellent. There are no significant condition issues.
