48 STARS, CROCHETED, A TREMENDOUS FOLK EXAMPLE, WWI-WWII ERA (1917-1945):
Beginning around the turn of the century, it became popular to crochet early American flags. This one, with its 48 needlework stars, is a complete standout from those I have seen due to its whimsically striking visual qualities. Crude but with a strong degree of modernistic sophistication, its elongated form is a pleasure to view.
This type of flag was evidently made from a kit, because I have owned numerous others. But someone decided to make this one twice as long as usual, deviate greatly from the typical design of pointed stars, and produce an object of considerably folk quality, probably without intention. Note the royal blue color, which adds to the already terrific presentation.
The 48 star flag represents the addition of Arizona in 1912 and was the official star count from that year until 1959. It was the official flag through WWI, WWII, and the Korean Conflict.
Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% silk organza throughout for support. It was then hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, which has been washed to remove excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye, and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is very minor foxing and staining, but there are no serious condition issues. |
