| Description: |

Wool hooked rug with a canted, spread-winged, Federal eagle. Likely made in the patriotism of the Mexican War (1846-48), note how the head faces the clutch of arrows in its proper right talon. While not always meaningful, I have a suspicion that it is purposeful in this instance. Set upon an ivory white ground, the central image is surrounded by a modeled field of cornflower blue, brown, ivory, and red, with a navy blue star in the upper left, and cornflower blue star with a circular, navy center in the lower right. There is a prairie point border, primarily of browns, tans, and reds, with a fantastic, early, chenille fringe.
Though this could be of Civil War origin—as at least one other example is known with a similar eagle and a count of 34 stars (1861-1863)—the fabrics and fringe suggest an earlier date.
A fantastic example among patriotic textiles of mid-19th century America.
Condition: Minor to moderate loss of fringe, varying around the perimeter. A few areas of modest repair. |
