Description: |
|
Wool hooked rug with a wonderful folk image of two horses, each standing before a weeping fern or flower, with what appear to be apples in various locations, including a basket, a feed bin, and trees above. Executed in mostly earth tones, and a hint of blue, the salmon red fruit makes for wonderful contrast. The perimeter of the rug, hooked on burlap, has a border of heavy, men’s, topcoat fabric, made of stout, double-knit wool with a twill weave, trimmed so that it has a scalloped edge. Made circa 1865-1880.
Mounting: The rug was professionally stitch-mounted on plain weave cotton, selected to match the salmon red color of some of the apples. A custom, wooden framework was created for support, and the background fabric was wrapped around it, so that almost 1.5” of depth is visible around the outer edge. This is deeper than usual and results in a more pronounced presentation.
Condition: There is a scattering of minor, bare areas and there is a scattering of minor repairs in the hooking, expertly done, using fragments clipped from a sheared rug of the same period. The latter constitute less than 1% of the composition. The rug presents beautifully. |
