Description....:
Suffragette hat band, made from glazed yellow cotton, with printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women". Suffragette textiles are particularly scarce and sought-after, and these long, narrow examples make for very interesting objects when conserved and framed. They could be clipped as desired and worn wherever the owner deemed fit, usually wrapped around the brim of a ladies’ hat, but probably worn also as armbands and displayed by other methods.

Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, though these were sometimes on American objects, as well.

Mounting: The textile has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton twill, black in color, that has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The mount was then placed in a cove-shaped molding that is very dark brown, nearly black in color, with reddish overtones and highlights, to which a rippled profile molding, black with gold highlights, was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.

Condition: There is moderate fading. There are tiny holes at either end, where the textile was once pinned into place.
