QUILL WEATHERVANE, 1880-1910, WITH EXCEPTIONAL FORM AND GILDED SURFACE:
Made ca 1880-1910, this quill weathervane was of a type that New York manufacturer A.B. & W.T. Westervelt billed with the following verbiage in its 1883 catalogue: "Especially designed and adapted for Newspapers, Libraries, Banks, Schools, Colleges, Academies, and other Public Institutions."
Found in a NYC collection, where resided there on a window sill for approximately 25 years, this example survives with exceptional surface and an appealing, shapely head with a squared point. This is likely post-1920, in-service water gilding, but it has exactly the kind of wear you wish to see through the passage of time on a roof, with years of light scratching from the talons of the thousands of birds that perched upon the shaft of the pen. While the specific maker is unknown, hundreds of companies copied one-another and produced the same forms.
Condition: Excellent. Minor dings. See above. |
