RARE FELT PENNANT FROM THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON, AUGUST 28, 1963, WHEN MARTIN LUTHER KING DELIVERED HIS HISTORIC "I HAVE A DREAM" SPEECH

Available: Sold
Frame Size (H x L): Approx. 20.5" x 38.5"
Flag Size (H x L): 11.5" x 28.5"
Description....:
Printed in white pigment on black felt, this rare political pennant was flown in tribute of what would soon be touted as one of the most galvanizing events in American civil rights history. It would have been acquired and waved by an attendee on that landmark day, in August of 1963, in our nation's capitol, when Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.

The triangular design is adorned with tapered text that reads:

March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom [the official title of the event]
Wed, Aug. 28, 1963
And Let the World Know We Want Freedom
"I was There"

Pinned around the perimeter are six celluloid buttons that the participant probably collected on various occasions. These include one advertising the march, one with black and white hands cradling a dove, one advertising a 1964 fund rally held by the black Mason's at the 369th Reg't Armory in Harlem, one for a Kennedy campaign, one mourning Dr. King's April 1968 assassination, and one for the "Poor People's Campaign," another March on Washington held in June of 1968, just following King's death. Though the pinbacks are not especially rare and condition varies, their presence augments the message of the rare textile and one might accurately suggest that they have become part of its story.

Mounting: The banner was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and have framed thousands of examples.

The background is ivory color hemp fabric or a hemp and cotton blend (we use both interchangeably). The two-part frame consists of a scooped profile molding, very dark brown in color, nearly black, with reddish undertones and highlights, to which a silver gilded, square profile molding was added as a cap. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass. Feel free to contact us for more details.

Condition: The pennant has no significant condition issues. The buttons vary from poor to good, but are not the objects of value herein.
