THE ONLY VINEGAR-PAINTED CHECKER BOARD I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED, EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AND CONDITION, PENNSYLVANIA ORIGIN, 1840-1870:
This exceptional checkerboard is the only example I have ever encountered with a sponged and combed, vinegar-painted background. The strong, rust-orange color and quality of the surface are simply exceptional. Even the back is neat, with the swirl decoration and obvious use for work as well as play.
Found in Pennsylvania, the board was long in the personal collection of Pat & Rich Garthoeffer and also has an Olde Hope Antiques provenance.
Condition: Excellent. Wear on reverse. |
