Description: |
|
"Too Fast" by Newbold Hough Trotter, a painter born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1827. Trotter studied at the Academy of the Fine Arts and was known for painting mostly animals. His more important works include "The Range of the Bison," "Grizzly Bears," "The Last Stand," "The Young Bull," and "The Barnyard" (the latter signed and dated Philadelphia, 1866). He passed in Atlantic City, NJ in 1898.
Executed in oil on canvas, this particular work is signed on the reverse in the following manner: "#RAR 'Too Fast' N.H. Trotter Pxt 1888." The image features an Irish Setter, a Gordon Setter, and an English Pointer (or similar breed) on a Pennsylvania landscape flushing a covey of grouse or quail before their handler(s) would have perhaps wished for a successful chance at a shot.
Mounting: The ogee profile, veneered mahogany molding dates to the period between 1830 and the 1850's. To this I added a modern gold molding with an antiqued bronze finish around the perimeter.
Condition: The work has been cleaned and re-varnished, but there are no apparent repairs. The reverse of the canvas is nicely oxidized with no patches. |
