Triangular, felted wool pennant, made for the U.S. Navy sometime between 1930 and the 1950's. The background is Navy blue , as are two of the felt ties along the hoist end. The word “Navy” is applied in felt, block letters in golden yellow. There are two gold stars, one each above and below the letter “N,” and a federal shield with 13 stars and 13 vertical pales (stripes), alternating red, white, red, is appliqued along the hoist end. A length of gold felt is stitched to the hoist for reinforcement. One golden yellow tie is present at the top.
Mounting: The pennant was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and have framed thousands of examples.
The background is 100% natural hemp fabric or a hemp and cotton blend, ivory in color. The black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed molding is Italian. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.
Condition: There would have been another gold tie at the bottom, now absent. There are three small moth holes, including one in the blue tie at the bottom, one in the letter “A,” and one in the blue field along the lower edge, near the center. There is extremely minor soiling. |
