Felted wool pennant in a small scale with an unusual color scheme for its U.S. Navy text, that appears in chrome yellow on a sunfire orange ground. Made between 1910 and 1920, a single violet tie (probably once blue in color) is threaded through a hole in the center of the hoist end and knotted. This too is in a tapered format like the pennant itself, which is something that I have not before encountered. All-in-all a really nice looking, endearing, and atypical example.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding retains its original gilded liner and dates to the period between the Civil War (1861-65) and the 1870's. The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric, ivory in color. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: Minor soiling, fading, and pigment loss. |
