TRIPLE MOURNING PORTRAIT OF FIREMEN WITH GREAT FOLK ATTRIBUTES, CA 1870
Dimensions (inches): frame - 10.75" x 16.5", work - 8" x 13.5"
Description:
Rendered by a child with wax crayon and watercolor, this three-register mourning portrait of firemen has just the kind of desired qualities that bring admiration to outsider/folk artists like Bill Traylor. Note that each is wearing a numbered parade hat and that the man on the right may have been the chief, because his coat is blue instead of black.

The portraits are painted on a piece of brown parchment and are recessed behind a piece of mat board with oval windows. Black, mourning draperies hang above each window. Ca 1870-80.

Mounting: The black-painted molding has great surface dates to the period between 1790 and 1820. I married it to the work. There is archival behind it and the glass is u.v. protective.

Condition: There is minor age toning and smudging, but no serious condition issues that negatively affect the object.
