Triangular, suffragette pennant, made entirely of felt, with nice scale and an elongated format. Machine-appliqued, violet, letters, on a yellow ground, read: "Votes for Women." There is a black binding along the hoist with black ties, two of which are absent at the lower position.
Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles such as this. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, and while these sometimes appear in the States, it is unusual to see a combination of English and American colors on one textile.
Pinned to the lower end of the hoist binding is a classic pin-back, gold with black letters, that also bears the "Votes for Women" message. Because it was with the pennant when I found it, I decided not to sell it separately, but to leave it intact as part of its history.
Suffragette pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This is nice example, in a nice scale, with unusual coloration and a pleasant format.
Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples.
The background is 100% hemp fabric or a hemp and cotton blend (we use these interchangeably). The mount was then placed in a black-painted and hand-gilded Italian molding, to which a black molding with a wood grain surface was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.
Condition: There is modest to moderate soiling throughout, accompanied by moderate fading of the violet letters. The bottom two ties are absent. Many of my clients prefer early flags and related textiles to show their age and history of use. |
