TRIANGULAR SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT WITH TEXT THAT READS: "VOTES FOR WOMEN", 1910-1920:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant, with printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women." Golden yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This is nice example in a manageable size.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding dates to the period between 1860 and the 1880's, has terrific early black varnished surface and retains its original gilded liner with resist decoration. The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color. The black fabric was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There is extremely minor soiling and there is a tiny nick in the fabric along the top edge of the pennant, accompanied by a couple of tiny nicks and pinprick-sized holes in the ties. Many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use. |
