TRIANGULAR SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT WITH A CRUDE, PULLED WORK FRINGE AND TEXT THAT READS: "VOTES FOR WOMEN", 1910-1920:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant, made of yellow cotton bunting, with a pulled fringe and printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women." Note how the lettering diminishes in size from left to right, congruent with the shape of the textile, with the word "for" placed at a diagonal slant. Violet and yellow were the customary colors of the suffrage movement in America, though red, white and blue objects are also seen. Violet and green were the colors of the women's movement in England.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This is an interesting example in a style that I have not previously owned.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding has a gilded liner and dates to the period between 1860 and 1880. The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color. The black fabric was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is minor foxing and staining, primarily located along the hoist where the pennant was once tacked to a wooden staff. Many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use. |
