Triangular suffragette pennant, on its original wooden staff, with black lettering on a white ground that reads: "Votes for Women." Printed on cotton, there is a narrow border with a diagonal stripe. The lettering is somewhat elongated in height and interesting, with the word "for" canted at an angle and accentuated by lines above and below.
While the women who marched is American Suffrage parades were most often garbed in white, yellow was the customary color for most of the pennants and ribbons that are encountered, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black. Some organizations used other colors, such as violet and green, copied from their counterparts in the English Suffrage movement. Red, white, and blue is sometimes seen, or blue and yellow, but white is especially unusual, despite the many thousands of white dresses worn by Suffragettes. No pennants in this color are documented in the primary text on Suffrage collecting.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This one is undocumented and is the only one I have encountered in this style.
* Note: With all but the tiniest Stars & Stripes parade flags and various other printed patriotic banners, we generally remove the staffs for framing. This is because a great deal of blank space is left in the frame that doesn't contribute positively to the presentation. Staffs are common on both parade flags and banners. Because I do not recall having ever found a large scale Suffrage pennant still affixed to its original staff, its presence here is unusual and I decided to leave it intact.
Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by masters degree trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples; more than anyone worldwide.
The background is 100% cotton twill. The molding is Italian, black-painted, gilded and distressed. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.
Condition: There is minor soiling and extremely minor fraying. |
