TRIANGULAR SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT WITH ATTRACTIVE TEXT AND AN UNUSUAL BLUE AND YELLOW COLOR SCHEME, 1910-1920:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant, with printed text that reads: "Votes for Women." I have not before encountered this particularly attractive design, the most beautiful feature of which is its whimsical lettering that has a Western American sensibility, and the most unusual attribute of which is the use of blue instead of violet. Note how the color exhibits a ombré transition from light to dark blue. This appears to be purposeful, which is interesting in a textile of this period, especially within text. The intent is evidenced by the strong shade of cornflower blue, which is not suggestive of a faded pigment.
Violet and yellow were the customary colors of the suffrage movement in America, though red, white and blue objects are also seen. Violet and green were the colors of the women's movement in Great Britain, though the combination was sometimes adopted for use in the States.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This is a terrific example in a bold large size.
Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. The mount was then placed in a gilded French molding of exceptional quality, to which a ripple profile liner was added. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is minor soiling and very minor pigment loss throughout. Many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use. |
