Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed white lettering that reads: "Votes for Women" on a cheddar yellow ground. Note the interesting, vertical orientation of the word "votes" and the fanciful scrollwork above and below the word "for".
Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. The white text is very unusual for a yellow pennant. I have owned this same example on several occasions with black text, but never white.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. An example of a pennant in this style was documented in "The Keynoter: Journal of the American Political Items Conservators," Summer/Fall/Winter 2008 (Women's Suffrage Special Triple Issue), Volume 2008, Number 2-4, p.133.
Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by masters degree trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples; more than anyone worldwide.
The background is 100% hemp fabric or a hemp and cotton blend. The mount was then placed in a modern frame with a finish that is very dark brown, nearly black, with red with a red undertone and highlights, to which a black-painted and hand-gilded Italian molding was added as a cap. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.
Condition: There is very minor mothing. |
