Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women" on a cheddar yellow ground. Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, though these can be seen as well in certain American objects.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This one is firmly above average due to the graphic nature of the text with the vertically-orientation of the word "votes" and the fanciful scrollwork above and below the word "for". The black ties along the hoist provide nice balance.
Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. The mount was then placed in a gilded French molding, to which a ripple profile molding with gold highlights was added as a liner. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There is minor pilling and wear and very minor soiling. Many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use. This one displays beautifully. |
