TRIANGULAR FELT SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT WITH AN INTERESTING DESIGN AND TEXT THAT READS: "VOTES FOR WOMEN", 1910-1920:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women" on a cheddar yellow ground. Violet and yellow were the customary colors of the suffrage movement in America, though red, white and blue objects are also seen. Violet and green were the colors of the women's movement in England.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This one is firmly above average due to the graphic nature of the text with the vertically-orientation of the word "votes" and the fanciful scrollwork above and below the word "for". The black ties along the hoist provide nice balance.
Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. The mount was placed in a black molding with red highlights, to which a hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding was added as a liner. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There is minor misprinting and wear in the black lettering, minor fabric wear, and there is moderate to significant water staining. many of my clients prefer early flags and banners to show their age and history of use. This one displays beautifully. |
