Found in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where there are many resort lakes through the Pocono Mountains, this two-sided trade sign is painted on two planks of pine with a cut-nailed molding on all four sides. Painted in black on an ochre white ground, the professionally executed lettering reads "Fresh and Smoked Fish; Ed, Kephart's Market."
The beautiful iron brackets on either side are blacksmith made and are either earlier than the sign itself or may be period to its construction. In either case they have with it for a long time as evidenced by the worn and much-weathered screws on the right-hand-side.
Condition: There is light expected wear on the face on one side and more significant wear on the opposite. The molding has been chewed and worn in several places and was probably barn-kept for some years. The screws on the left side that affix the bracket were replaced. |
