VERDIGRIS GREEN DROPLEAF FARM TABLE ON COUNTRY SHERATON LEGS, MID-19TH CENTURY, AMERICAN:
Great color, surface, and form adorn this country Sheraton farm table. Friendly size and proportions accommodate 6 people with ease; 2 more if need be. Made of poplar with finely turned legs, the two layers of green paint and wear from regular use result in an appearance quite similar to the green verdigris on old copper. The color is both keenly pleasant and unusual. Made during the mid-19th century (1840-60), the top is comprised of two planks with a narrow strip of the same wood in the very center. The base is mortised and pegged. Each leaf is a single plank, held in place when raised in a traditional manner with a swivel arm of wood that becomes part of the skirt when folded in.
The culmination of visual features makes for a great table for an advanced collector of American folk art.
Condition: Expected wear from regular use. Some nails added over time for stability. Hinges replaced. Sturdy and durable. |
