SHENANDOAH VALLEY HUNT-BOARD-TYPE WORK TABLE IN BLACK PAINT, CA 1830-1860:
Shenandoah Valley yellow pine server, reminiscent of a hunt board in form with its tall height and country Hepplewhite legs. There is a single drawer and a great early black painted surface.
Extra-high, tapered-leg, Southern servers and hunt boards are very desirable. I love the black painted surface on this one in particular, as well as its spidery form. The rather crude construction is typical of Valley-origin furniture. The base is mortised and wooden-pegged. The face of the drawer overlaps substantially on each side, which is unusual. The lambs-tongued legs (purposely flattened, molded corners) have a very folky splay and extend to a fine point. There was a knob on the drawer for at least a portion of its life, but it may not have been there originally. The lack of a knob gives it a much plainer look, which I think adds a lot to its overall presence. |
