Description: |
|
Beautiful, small scale, tavern or work table, with boldly splayed case and legs, the latter of which are finely turned and terminate in shapely, spade feet. The two-board top has breadboard ends and is original. Possibly of Maine origin, made circa 1810-1840, the red-painted base has strong color and great surface. The top is in a wonderful state of preservation, with great patina, retaining a significant amount of early paint. Worn and scrubbed through years of use, this has achieved the sort of warm polish that develops over time.
The top is constructed of pine. The base is actually tiger maple with rather strong figuring, visible on the interior.
Condition: Overall excellent. Some scratches and loss as expected from use. Split at the top of one leg, in the squared section where it meets the case, has a glued repair (tight). The top was at some point re-glued, as expected in a table of this period. |
