SMALL SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT WITH "VOTES FOR WOMEN" TEXT, 1910-1920:
Small Suffragette pennant, made from a length of yellow cotton cloth with applied yellow paper, on which "Votes for Women" was professionally printed. A hand-sewn, open sleeve was created along the hoist so that it could be affixed to a wooden staff. This sort of object was no-doubt created in haste for a parade or rally. Its shape is both interesting and attractive. While I previously assumed that this was a homemade example, I have seen another of the same type and so the possibility exists that they were, in fact, be cottage industry-produced. of course it is also possible that they were homemade by the organization itself that used them, in preparation an event or even to hand-out in a parade to bystanders.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. Golden yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England.
Mounting: The solid walnut frame dates to the period between 1860 and 1880, has excellent, early, black varnished surface, and retains its original gilded liner. The textile has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There are no significant condition issues. |
