Description....:
Triangular suffragette pennant, hand-lettered and decorated in black paint, on a length of plain weave, white cotton. The tapered profile is especially narrow, which lends an interesting feature to its appearance. The most interesting visual characteristic, however, is the Roman lettering, amateurly rendered and tall, that almost invokes an American western feel. This is enhanced by the crude black carriage striping along the border.

The colors of the pennant might seem predictable, considering that the women who marched in American Suffrage parades were most often garbed in white, but pennants and other textiles employed in the States at such events, produced by commercial makers, were customarily yellow. Some organizations used other colors, such as violet and green, copied from their counterparts in the English Suffrage movement. Red, white, and blue is sometimes seen, or blue and yellow, but white is especially unusual. No pennants in this color are documented in the primary text on Suffrage collecting.

Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. Because it is homemade, this one is singular among known examples.

Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples.

The background is 100% cotton twill. The modern molding is black with a interesting surface, slightly bubbled but subtle, a traditional, early American profile, and a silver inner lip. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.

Condition: There is minor to modest soiling in an approximately vertical line between the "E" and the "S," and along the lower edge. There is some leeching of the oil in the painted elements into the surrounding fabric.
