Description....:
While James Montgomery Flagg may have painted the most famous version of Uncle Sam ever rendered, it’s hard to deny that this image, commissioned from none other than N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) for a WWII war drive poster, is any less striking. One of America's greatest illustrators, Wyeth gave exciting visual life to more than a century of classic adventure stories. From the Wild West, to pirates, to Robinson Crusoe, to the books of Robert Louis Stevenson and James Fenimore Cooper, his work graced magazine covers, books and calendars. For America’s largest and real adventure of the twentieth century--World War II--Wyeth utilizes his most heroic style to depict a stirring version of Uncle Sam, amidst the smoke of the battlefield. In it the mascot for American patriotism grasps a billowing American national flag, while pointing the nation on to victory, as war planes fly overhead and soldiers go forth with bayonets in WWI style helmets and gear. The reason for the outdated apparel is due to the early date that Wyeth would have begun work on the image. Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th, 1941. Published in 1942, this is my personal favorite of all patriotic posters of the Second World War.

This poster was released in more sizes than any other of the WWI or WWII eras. This is the next-to-the-largest size, bold and commanding. Very few copies of it are known to have survived.

Mounting & Framing: The poster was professionally mounted on canvas by a previous owner. The mount was placed in a black-painted and hand-gilded, Italian molding, with a substantial, shaped profile. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic (Plexiglas).

Condition: Excellent, with no significant condition issues.
