SPECTACULAR STORK CARVING WITH BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED AND CRAZED SURFACE, MICHIGAN, 1880-1920:
Found in Michigan, the quality of this beautifully executed folk carving of a stork is only outdone by the condition of its original, polychrome-painted surface. While birds in the crane family are certainly some of the most interesting found in nature, they were seldom reproduced by decoy carvers because, with the exception of the goose-like sand crane, they were not regularly hunted. Still, this carving was probably the work of one of the many decoy carvers on the Great Lakes.
Great for the collection of any bird lover, obstetrician, or anyone involved in pediatric medicine. From a folk art perspective, this is one of the best bird carvings I've seen in a long time.
Condition: Excellent. |
