SOUTHERN BLANKET CHEST ON TALL, TAPERED LEGS, IN SALMON PAINT WITH EXCELLENT SURFACE, VIRGINIA / TENNESSEE / KENTUCKY REGION, 1830-50:
Southern blanket chest on mortised legs that taper at the bottom to finely pointed, country Hepplewhite feet. The rather crude, yet beautiful form has a Shaker-like simplicity. Made in the Virginia / Tennessee / Kentucky region, the style is reminiscent of tapered-legged hunt boards and sugar chests. The exceptional, dry, salmon-painted surface is mid-19th century. As a thin layer applied over an earlier ochre white, it possesses an opaque quality that enhances its appeal. Form, color, and surface combine for a splendid presentation.
Construction: The mix of poplar and heart pine is unusual and indicative of the fact that the maker used what was available to him. The 6-board design is assembled with mortised joints and cut nails. The top has bread-boarded ends.
Provenance: From a NJ/NY dealer's collection, where it had resided for 20 years.
Condition: The top has a laterally running split. The back has two chips (upper left and lower right), but the wood is present and the case is structurally sound. The right-hand-breadboard end is a replacement. The cast iron hinges and lock mechanism are early, but are old replacements. |
