Suffragette ribbon, made of yellow silk, in an unusually large scale, with wonderful, early, Romanesque lettering that ready simply "woman suffrage." This verbiage is a bit unusual on textiles of this sort, including ribbons, hat and arm bands, pennants, etc., which instead choose to display the message "Votes for Women." But the most wonderful feature about this example is its size and style, which are complimented by its muted color, attractive oxidation and wear.
Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, but these were adopted in the States by a New York City organization, led by an American woman who had spent the previous 20 years in Britain.
Larger scale Suffragette textiles are particularly scarce and sought-after. This one is rare among the known designs. I have not before encountered this particular example and it is not documented in the primary references on suffrage material.
Mounting: The ribbon was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by masters degree trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and related textiles and have framed thousands of examples; more than anyone worldwide.
The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color. The 2-part molding includes a cove-shaped molding that is very dark brown, nearly black in color, with reddish overtones and highlights, to which a rippled profile molding, black with gold highlights, was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.
Condition: There is minor soiling in limited areas and there is one tiny, pinprick-sized hole, but there are no other condition issues. Many of my clients prefer early patriotic and political textiles to show their age and history of use gracefully. |
