White, silk handkerchief, decorated in one corner with a hand embroidered image of a suffragette, dressed in blue and white, with a yellow hat, and holding high a yellow flag that reads “Votes for Women.” The textile itself is typical of the 19-teens, with a pulled work border. The embroidery work was hand-done in a cottage industry setting. An example of the textile is illustrated in one of Ken Foley’s publications.*
Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and relate textiles and have framed thousands of examples. Feel free to contact us for further information.
The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color. The two-part frame consists of a step-down profile molding, nearly black with red undertones and highlights, to which a gilded, ripple profile molding was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective Plexiglas.
Condition: Excellent, with only very minor oxidation.
* The referenced example appears in either "Women's Suffrage Memorbilia" (2013, McFarland & Co., North Carolina), or in a journal-like publication on Suffragette items published by the American Political Items Collectors (APIC), both of which were written by Ken Foley. |
