Description....:
Patriotic trinket box in the form of a federal shield, made sometime between the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Sesquicentennial of American Independence (150th anniversary) in 1926. The count of 20 stars is merely decorative, though the 13 pales (vertical stripes) happen to be correct in number. It is widely unknown that these should actually begin and end with white, however, unlike the American national flag, which starts and ends on red.

Made of paper board and covered in printed silk, the top of the box is padded with cotton batting. These may have been sold as sewing boxes, candy containers, or "just for nice."

Mounting: The box has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, that has been washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a combination of moldings that are made of wood, but have exceptional finishes that look like rusted iron and gunmetal. A shadow box was created to house the object and keep the silk away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: Excellent.
