PENNSYLVANIA, PAINT-DECORATED SETTEE IN MUSTARD WITH YELLOW TRIM, WITH BELL FLOWERS, GRAPES & FLORA, 1845-1865
Dimensions (inches): 34" tall x 71.75" long x 21.5" deep, 16.75" seat height
Description:
Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania, plank-seat settee of the mid-19th century (1845-65), in the half-spindle-back style with an angel wing crest rail. The background is mustard yellow with yellow, brown and black striping. The theorem-like registers on the crest rails are typical of rural Pennsylvania chairs and benches. There is a large bell flower in the center, flanked by a tulip and various flora. On each side register there are grapes, flanked by another bell flower and more foliage. The overall result is a pleasing example of Pennsylvania German folk art on a piece of rural-made, paint- decorated furniture.
