Description:
BRIGHT GREEN, PLANK-SEATED SETTEE WITH PAINTED AND GILDED DECORATION, ESPECIALLY RARE WITH AN ORIGINAL PAPER MAKER'S FROM BROWN'S "CHAIR MANUFACTORY", READING PENNSYLVANIA (BERKS COUNTY), 1845-1865:

Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania settee of the mid-19th century (1845-65), in the half-spindle-back style. The bright, kelly green background creates the perfect contrast for the rich copper and gold tones used in the gilt-stenciled and hand-decorated elements. These consist of three urns of fruit, separated by beautiful striping and angel wing designs. The angle wing form is often scroll-cut into the crest rail with wide, serpentine scalloping, but here the designs are instead fancifully painted with a decorative bow tied at the center. Trimmed out in chrome yellow and dark forest green, strong colors and a thoughtful flow of elements make this a well-executed example of Pennsylvania German folk art.

The extra-deep plank seat on this example is in keeping with its slightly larger size and adds another interesting attribute. The bench is a couple of inches wider and taller, as well as deeper than the average example.

On the bottom is a rare, original, paper maker's label that reads "Brown's, Chair Manufactory, W. Penn. St., Reading, PA".

Condition: Exceptional. Minor crack in the back right corner of the single board, plank seat. Far less than expected wear.
