SCARLET SILK CONFEDERATE BANNER, UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY, 1895-1920, REFERENCES THE WIFE OF JEFFERSON DAVIS, VERBAL PROVENANCE LINKING IT TO THE ESTATE OF STONEWALL JACKSON:
This striking, red silk, United Daughters of the Confederacy reunion banner, said to have been found at the former estate of Stonewall Jackson. Decorated with gilt-painted text and a depiction of the Stars & Bars, the banner references the fact that the event honored Jefferson Davis's wife, who served the UDC as "Matron of Honor of the South". The construction is typical of silk banners made in the period between 1895-1920.
The U.D.C. actually began as the "National Association of the Daughters of the Confederacy" (N.A.D.C.), which was organized in 1894 by Caroline Meriwether Goodlett and Anna Davenport Raines. The organization traces its lineage to older associations, such as the Daughters of the Confederacy in Missouri and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Confederate Soldiers Home in Tennessee. The N.A.D.C. changed its name to the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1895 and was later incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia (1919).
