LARGE SCALE MAINE TAVERN TABLE WITH CHROME YELLOW BASE AND BLACK, TWO-BOARD TOP:
Large scale, oval tavern table with boldly turned legs, terminating in bold trumpet feet, and a two-board, wide-plank top. Likely of Maine origin, ca 1810-40, the table is large enough to seat four for breakfast. The base retains a 19th century surface of striking chrome yellow paint, with excellent craquelure, while the black painted top lends excellent contrast.
The top is constructed of pine, while the legs are hardwood. This table is probably a rural make-do; a marriage between the mid-19th century base and an extraordinary, 18th century top.
Note the highly unusual, chamfered support ring that runs the underside of the top to prevent it from warping, and the chamfered slat that is mortised through the skirt for the same purpose. The combination was effective, as there isn't the slightest amount of warp.
Provenance: For the past 25 years, this was Connecticut dealer, Tom Dupre's kitchen table. He purchased it from Maine dealer Pat Stauble.
Condition: See ppg. 2, above. In addition, there is some paint loss and some nails were added over time for stability. There is a very old, missing chip on the underside support ring. |
